Owning a mobile phone in uk may probably be one of the top priorities in the checklist of someone who needs to be at pace with the modern world. The mobile phone is said to be a must have device, such that it performs beyond that of communication, but also for information, entertainment, as well as organization for people on the go. If you want to get yourself a mobile phone, what are the things you need to think about?

First of all, you have generally two options: you can go prepaid or go postpaid. This means that you have a pay as you go plan wherein you can top up for minutes of text messages you can use. You can buy a top up card from any of the phone shops in and around the UK. However, if you choose to subscribe to a postpaid or pay monthly plan, you have a contract that keeps you under the network for 18 months or 12 months. You can choose a mobile phone contract that is affordable for your paying power, or one that has features such as a free unit, a discount on a handset, or mobile web browsing, to name a few.

So you have decided on going postpaid. Before you shell out your money on a mobile phone or a mobile phone tariff, you need to select a service provider first. These can be any of the major ones in the country, like Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, and O2. Virgin Mobile and 3 are also among the recommended ones, according to sources. Select a tariff from their services, one that is affordable for you, which can be from £25 to £75 per month in some networks. If you’re lucky, you might get your mobile phone handset of choice for free, depending on the minutes or text messages you sign up for.

From your phone shop, you should also choose a subscription plan that lets you have access to mobile internet browsing, so you can check your email, surf the net, and more from your phone. It would also be great if your network allows you to download songs, games, and applications with your mobile phone. Video calls, picture messages, and even online purchasing of songs are among the common features you can get as a subscriber to any of these popular networks. But remember, you need to budget your money wisely, because you don’t want to spend too much on mobile phone usage, right?

Dr Anton Chuvakin, Chief Logging Evangelist at LogLogic, talks iQ through the difference between the wood and the trees…

1. What?

Logs. System logs, audit trails, network logs, IDS (Intrusion Detection System) and IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) alerts. These – and basically all the other transactional data our information systems are spewing out at us at an ever-increasing rate – can all be classified as logs. Log files can in turn be classified by the various sources producing them.

The kind of system log files produced by operating systems like UNIX, Linux, and Windows are, for instance, different from the network device logs produced by networking gear (routers, switches, and so on) from the likes of Cisco, Nortel, and Lucent. Security appliance logs produced by firewalls, IDSs, IPSs, or messaging security appliances are different again. In fact, security devices display a wide diversity in what they log and the format in which they do it.

2. So?

Historically little real attention has been paid to basic system logs. They are, however, an important and even crucial source of information about the activity taking place across our systems at any given time, and are becoming particularly vital from a governance and compliance perspective for example.

3. And?

This is being complicated by the fact that more and more log sources are being added to today’s already nebulous mix of logs coming from server, application, firewall, and security appliances. This includes the increasing amounts of log data produced by mobile devices and internet-connected appliances. The average large company will already typically produce many gigabytes worth of log data each week.

4. So now what?

System logs are the source of three vital types of insight:

1. Security – logs are useful for detecting attacks; they are also indispensable for incident investigations and forensics.

2. Regulatory compliance – many regulations in the UK, the US, and other countries mandate the collection and review of logs; more and more auditors now demand proof of log collection and review.

3. IT operational efficiency – systems administrators can reach for logs when troubleshooting the system problems; logs are also used to measure network and application performance. Essentially then, at a high level, logs equal accountability – from answerability and enforcement to responsibility, blameworthiness, and liability. There are many other corporate accountability mechanisms of course, but logs pervade all of IT, and if your IT isn’t accountable, your business isn’t either.

The argument is therefore, that if you’re not serious about logs, you’re not serious about accountability. Not a message any organisation wants to be sending; particularly in the current climate.

5. So what do we do about it?

While your IT infrastructure will already be producing heaps of logs by default, some parts will probably need to be configured to produce even larger volumes if they’re to be useful for security, compliance, and operations. While some technologies, such as databases, generally have almost no logging configured by default, so will need their logging settings turned on or enabled.

Overall, from the point of view of issues like regulatory compliance, data theft investigation, and operational system troubleshooting, it’s better to err on the side of more rather than less logs. Detailed file access logs will, for example, help to track which users are accessing sensitive data (security), review regulated document access (compliance) and monitor ser ver performance (operational research).

6. Who needs logs?

A diverse range of people will typically utilise their organisation’s log-based information. IT administrators, IT managers, security analysts, incident responders, IT directors and even CIOs and compliance officers are commonly among those either looking at logs directly, or at reports based on them. While senior officers and managers don’t generally want to look at raw logs, and instead favour log-based reports, analysts and administrators tend to want both original raw logs (usually accessible via a search) as well as reports (customised and provided by the system).

7. How to make that happen?

A good way to take control of your business’s logs is to deploy a log management system, though larger, more advanced organisations often favour a log data warehouse approach. Such systems centralise the collection, storage, and access of log data across the enterprise, freeing it from the more device-by-device based approach to log management, which tends to be inefficient and heavily reliant on manual tasks.

Providing a central repository for all log data, the warehouse enables users to quickly and easily query and report on this data, and to efficiently manage the massive amounts of log data generated through network devices, security gear, operating systems, network ser vers, databases, and more. It also goes beyond simple storage, allowing users to discover and act on relationships between data from these heterogeneous data sources.

8. But what’s wrong with what they have now?

Today many organisations employ ad hoc approaches to logs: whereby the security team “owns” network IDS logs, the network team owns the firewall and router logs (as well as all SNMP traps) and the system administrator owns the logs produced by servers and desktops. That’s not only counterproductive, inefficient, and wasteful; it’s also dangerous.

9. Why?

Such approaches – divided by both technical and political chasms – can break down painfully. In the case of an incident response, for instance.

Here, instead of being able to run a single query across all logs and all log sources (or a defined subset of logs or log sources), the user often ends up having to beg for the log data they need; having to connect, wait, and download logs; having to look in many places at once; and generally wasting huge amounts of time and energy.

All this when they could simply connect to a log management system and run a few reports, drilldowns, and searches. It’s also an issue from a compliance perspective. Most regulations and mandates don’t single out logs by the type of the log source, but apply to all logs across the organisation. Using one system to verify compliance status therefore makes much more sense than having to dig around in several different systems.

A telephone is almost an indispensable part of our lives. You can rarely find a household that does not have at least one telephone connection wherein there are many with several connections for heavy usage. The business people, service men and even house wives use the telephones to communicate with the world. The landline phones also serve quite a number of purposes and one of them is that you can use the telephone bills as address proofs. Looking at the growing popularity of these telephone sets the manufacturers are coming up with devices that are equipped with a number of advanced features.

If you are looking for an ideal device for using it at office or for technical purposes the M3903 telephone is the perfect choice. The “Option 11C Nortel PBX” is available with this particular device. It supports about 4 lines and at the same time there are two keys available for self labeling. The enhanced “Call Log” feature of this phone set increases its productivity noticeably. You can easily find the record of the last 5 outgoing phone calls and 10 incoming calls on the display. You can pick up the unanswered calls from the entire list which makes it easier.

M3904 professional telephone is another telephone perfectly suitable for office usage. The phone set comes with a number of special enhancements. The display of the set is the largest of all available in the market. There is a personal directory along with the call log which makes the usage far more customizable. The cost of the set is quite affordable and this is the reason why most of the people prefer to select it. The Nortel PBX system is pretty advanced and this is why it provides the user with more flexibility and empowerment.

Mobile phones are comfortable means of communication and the world seems to have reduced in size as one can connect with anyone in any part of the globe. Mobile phones help us in performing our personal as well as professional task with great ease and speed. Rarely will we find someone who does not have a mobile phone. These communication devices are packed with high-end features and offer a tinge of entertainment by allowing the user to listen to songs, click wonderful shots, or play games, watch amusing videos etc. People from all areas of life have integrated mobile phones as a necessary device which constitutes all the key features.

There are however two kinds of phones the pay-as-you-go phones and contract phones. The pay as you go phones can be activated with recharge coupons or top-ups. These phones are not dependent on a fair billing system. Another phone which is hugely in demand is the contract phone. With a contract phone one is not pressurised to pay at one shot; he or she has the option of paying in instalments. The contract mobile phones have an edge over the other phone as it provides attractive offers and advantages. Breath-taking gifts and discounts are some of its added advantages. To avail the services of this phone the user will have to sign up a contract with the network provider. The contract period is in existence for either twelve months or eighteen months. Alluring offers can be availed during this period such as free SMSs, reduced calling rates, free minutes etc. One need not get anxious about the advanced technologies such as 3G, GPRS, EDGE etc.

The user will not have to face the trauma of recharging his handsets in short intervals and there will be not an interruption while making an important call as the phone will be full of balance at all times. Other kind of offer is the cash-back where the user’s money will be refunded after the phone has been in service for a certain period of time. The user can return his phone and get his money returned to him. The user can thus enjoy various benefits and exciting deals.

The user will stay happy for the rest of his life and feel a sense of contentment . Network providers have a significant role to play in offering services along with connectivity. The contract deals have several tariff plans which suit the individual needs and requirements. One can also escape from the mounting monthly bills and experience a feeling of saving their hard-earned money .

The gift factor is also a tempting one as there are ipods, laptops, free mobile phone insurance in form of gifts which attract a large number of customers. One can visit various sites to gain information on some of the attractive offers and deals provided by potential retailers. The user thus, will not have to burn a hole in his pocket when buying a trendy and sophisticated phone and the services assure reliability and affordability. However it is of prime importance that the subscriber compares various deals before he decides to settle on one.

One should make a wise and informed decision which will not leave room for regretfulness. Deep analysis and comparison should be done between different handsets, their functionalities and the deal on offer. The online shops will unleash some of the newest handsets at reasonable rates. Thus a bit of research will prove to be quite helpful in fetching a lucrative deal. Hence those looking for a stable mobile service prefer to opt for this kind of a phone. The deal fulfils the needs of every segment of the society and the potential customer can buy his desired mobile phones at a budget-friendly price.

When General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection this past week, its 83-year tenure as a fixture within the Dow Jones Industrial Average also came to an end. Faced with the abrupt passing of an economic icon, the stock market rallied; a classic case of selling the rumor (fear of the unknown) and buying the news (increased knowledge of the future). This works in the reverse for good news.

Citigroup’s account in the DOW was also closed by Dow Jones. Replacements Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Travelers (TRV) have been given a mixed blessing, however, because over the last decade when stocks are added to the Dow it has generally coincided with a top in the stock’s price.

Meanwhile, a number of Chinese small-caps in our Consensus system have recently caught the fancy of investors, among them China Green Agriculture (CGA), which makes a special type of fertilizer you never heard of, but need to know about. Fluor (FLR) is a beaten down global infrastructure play that garnered more than $5 billion of new orders in the most recent quarter. Lastly, we profile Satyam Computer Services (SAY), a fallen angel we think is worth a gamble.

Detail

One by one, the icons of the economic hegemony of the West are toppling. The collapse of the Twin Towers was a literal tragedy, but also a symbolic event that marked the end of the myth of the invulnerable West. The implosion of the top-tier brokerages in 2008 cracked the financial foundations not only of Wall Street, but also revealed a pervasive Ponzi-like debt structure that has crippled many mainstream institutions.

This past week, the wheels came off the enterprise that for much of the 20th century was the world’s largest and most profitable. When General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday, however, the market rallied on the news. More about that in a minute.

Government Motors

General Motors has been the world’s largest car maker since 1932. As the U.S. government will own 60% of the downsized company and Canada will own 11%, the moniker Government Motors is likely to stick. Clearly the “bankruptcy” is being handled with kid gloves. It is actually part divestiture and restructuring, part nationalization and part bailout, as it will cost taxpayers around $40 billion.

One reason the market was able to rally in the face of the GM bankruptcy (apart from having correctly anticipated it) is that although automotive manufacturing accounts for the majority of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. (4.5 million), manufacturing per se has played a declining role in the U.S. employment picture over the last 30 years. Between 1979 and 2009, U.S. industrial output doubled, but manufacturing labor dropped from 21% of the total to just 9%.

The auto industry is still a key player in the economy, indirectly accounting for perhaps 4 jobs for every position in the industry itself, but in terms of value added, the automotive sector in the U.S. now contributes just 5.5% of total industrial output.

A more important measure of economic health for the U.S. is the Institute for Supply Management’s index of service-related businesses, which make up almost 90% of the economy. The monthly report was issued this week and indicates virtually no improvement in May compared to April. So why is the market rallying in the face of GM’s temporary demise and a dearth of hard data supporting the green shoot hypothesis?

Old News

The simple answer is that the stories that make the headlines are mostly old news to the market. What does the market really pay attention to? The future. In testimony before Congress this week, Fed Chairman Bernanke said he expects “some growth” to return later this year. According to a survey by Bloomberg, most economists agree with the Fed chief and expect the U.S. GDP to expand 0.5% as early as next quarter. This is the “news” the market is trading on. It buys the rumor and sells the facts when the story is positive; it sells the negative rumor and buys the news when the bad news finally arrives. Is this efficient? Perhaps. It is certainly human.

When GM’s bankruptcy was finally confirmed, however, some wheels did turn. Richard Thompson, the editor-in-chief of Dow Jones, quietly announced that GM would be removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average after 83 years of membership. Only General Electric, which was added in 1907, has been in the venerable index longer.

Curse of the Dow

GM is being replaced in the Dow Jones Industrial average by network hardware maker Cisco (CSCO), not by another auto company such as Ford or Toyota. With respect to the latter company, Mr. Thompson may have missed an opportunity to diversify the index even further by including a foreign-based company that has extensive operations in the U.S. Given that GM is going to be selling its Hummer division to a Chinese car maker, such a move could be viewed as prescient. We certainly expect to see more distressed asset sales to foreign-based companies over the next few years.

But let’s not cry for Toyota. In the last decade, the invitation to join the exclusive Club of Thirty has more often than not marked a significant top in the stock price of the favored company.

Both Microsoft and Intel were plugged into the DJIA in November of 1999 and are now trading far below those levels even after the strongest stock market rally in 75 years. American International Group was added in 2004, never rose much higher and is now 98% below the premium price at which it was added. Pfizer was injected into the DJIA in 2004, which marked a top in Pfizer’s shares. PFE is now 66% lower and bleeding. Bank of America (BAC) became an accredited member in February of 2008, just at the beginning of its historic slide. Shares are now discounted 75%, even after the bounce from the March lows. Kraft Foods was assimilated in September of 2008 and so far that month has marked its peak in price.

But there’s more. In an ironic tortoise and hare tale, Citigroup is also being delisted from the DJIA and will be replaced by Travelers. Citigroup ejected Travelers via a spin off in 2002, as CEO Sandy Weil deemed the stodgy insurance business a leaden liability in his race to conquer the banking world. At first, Weil seemed to have made a savvy choice, as Citigroup shares scampered to a double over the next four years, whereas Travelers’ barely crawled ahead. In the end, however, TRV has a positive net increase today compared to 2002, whereas shares of Citigroup are down 97%. In the end, the spurned tortoise had the last laugh.

Any switching equipment will not be of much use if the cable network that runs voice and data is of poor standard. The voice and data cabling network should be a structured one with high quality installation practices. Each individual or business will have its own specific peculiarities and special requirements. Moreover, the network should be secure and it is mandatory that the security is not compromised in any manner.

The latest data cabling technologies include gigabit ethernet, UTP, Cable Trays, KRONE HIGHBAND 25, Cat5E, wireless networking 108 Mbps, wireless LAN, wireless WiFi Hotspot and high quality fibre optic cabling. The company doing the data cabling should have trained engineers who can handle the installation and subsequent data cabling management efficiently.

In the modern business environment, organizations need to have a global approach and data is one of the most important assets for all business houses. Hence, they should ensure smooth data availability, data redundancy and data security. The data center of the organization should be able to store, process, manage and exchange data efficiently. In modern data cabling work, the process is divided into three structures. The first one is the computer network which is the central data processing facility. The second is the storage area network, which interconnects the data servers and the storage devices. The third is the Internet, which connects these two centres with other companies or individuals by providing Internet and data transfer services.

In a standard data cabling network, the main distribution area which houses core switches should be identified first. This area will be connected to equipment distribution area which houses all the electronic equipment. If needed, an additional zone distribution area can be set up as a point of consolidation to provide more flexibility. The data cabling centres should be able to handle data transfer at required high speeds. The centres should be protected from fire, flood, humidity, temperature, electrical disturbances and unwanted physical access. Normally, the communication from and to the data centres will be provided, LAN, WAN and CAN/MAN links. Based on the specific requirements of the data centres, the configuration will vary.

The data cabling structures should have the following features.

- Fast deployment

- Provisions for additions, changes and moves

- High bandwidth with the incorporation of future growth factors

- Support for speeds of 10G or higher

- Support for all storage devices like SCSI, fibre channel and NAS

- High quality, scalability and reliability

- Efficient space allocation

- Proper pathways, enclosures and racking

Data cabling systems should provide high speed data rates and handle the data stream without strain. The data cabling network provider should use pre-terminated components of high quality to eliminate any risk of system degradation. The system should not fail because of improper field termination. Moreover, the data cabling systems should be cost effective, though the cost should not be the sole deciding factor. The data cabling network provider should ensure that adequate air flow exists in data cabling centres so that the cables do not get overheated.
